Tuesday 18th | Activity: Heads Up – SPaG Edition

One of the SATs tests your child will sit this May 2020, will be the Spelling, punctuation and grammar paper (SPaG). It’s great to reinforce your grammar skills and vocabulary in preparation for the tests. This SPaG edition of heads up is a fun and competitive activity to try with your child.

You will need:

Small pieces of paper or card. (1-2 sheets recommended.)

Clear tape or headbands

Instructions:

Write different grammatical terms on several small pieces of paper or card. Player 1 has to stick one card on Player 2’s head without revealing the grammar term. Player 2 has to guess what is the term on their head by asking a series of questions such as, “is it a place?”, “is it a person?” Player 1 has to then answer by saying yes or no. If Player 2 is struggling then Player 1 can give out some clues. Rotate turns and the player with the most points, wins! To find SPaG terms why not use a copy of our famous SPaG Placemat!

Friday 21st | Activity: Tic-Tac-Toe (Grammar edition)

Getting to grips with Grammar terms can be tricky! This game will help your child to easily reinforce some of the critical SATs grammar terms your child should know in preparation for the tests this May 2020.

You will need:

9 medium pieces of paper or card.

A host to read out the question. (could be a parent or sibling)

Instructions:

This game is simple and easy to create. Write a different grammar topic term on each piece of paper. Assort them in the classic 3×3 tic-tac-toe style grid, ensuring they are turned over, with the blank side showing. Next, take turns choosing a square. You have to read out the term written on the chosen card. The person selected the card has to now provide a correct example of the term to get their “O” or “X” on the grid. If they pass or answer incorrectly, the question is transferred to you. First person to get their three X’s or O’s across, down or diagonally wins the the game.
