Growth Mindset Tips

Growth mindset is the belief that one can improve their intelligence, ability and performance. While a fixed mindset is the belief that abilities are innate and unchangeable. Children with growth mindset are more likely to progress faster and see challenges as learning opportunities. Thus we have collected a series of tips to help your year 6 child develop a growth mindset.

How do you develop a growth mindset? There isn’t a set way of rules one needs to follow in order to develop growth mindset, but why not try these tips to help foster a growth mindset.

  1. Praise the process & input over the result! Focusing on the effort helps enjoy the journey of learning.
  2. Don’t set the bar too high! Aiming for unrealistic goals can lead to feeling overwhelmed. Try doing things in small bites so you see the progress daily and think of the end goal as the overall puzzle. The small tasks leading to the end goal are the pieces of the puzzle.
  3. Surround yourself with people who help your growth mindset and encourage you to develop your own learning journey, education and personal development!
  4. Don’t be too hard on yourself! Stop at times to appreciate your achievements and be positive and energised!
  5. Make sure you acknowledge and embrace imperfections! Instead of hiding from weaknesses why not see them as opportunities to learning?
  6. Display visible growth mindset posters in your study or home space to remind you. You can access our 10 free growth mindset posters by clicking here.
  7. Try different learning tactics! What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another – which is perfectly fine that’s why thereare many learning strategies.
  8. Switch up your vocabulary! Instead of failure, think of it as a learning experience instead.
  9. Don’t seek approval, you can sacrifice your own potential when you focus too much on being approved.
  10. Think about the bigger picture as this will bring you a sense of meaning.
  11. Emphasise growth over speed! Don’t forget that sometimes things take long to happen, so instead of being obsessed with them finishing – learn to enjoy the voyage!
  12. It’s also important to reward actions not traits!
  13. Don’t get stuck in the definition of a genius and see this word from another angle
  14. Always reflect! Stop each week and look behind and be grateful and analyse positively your efforts!
  15. Place effort before talent!
  16. Abandon images and preconceptions! Don’t try to achieve someone else’s vision instead form your own.
  17. Take risks!
  18. Take ownership over your own attitude and acknowledge yourself as someone who possesses everything needed to grow further!
